The Era of Ada
For Ada Gricks, The Bell was not only the place she was the landlady for decades, it was also her birthplace. It held a very special place in her heart and The Bell’s legacy is owed to her hard work.
With the Era of Ada came the pub’s very full license in 1966. Up until this point, they had relied on being solely a beer house as they were unable to sell liquor. Throughout this time, The Bell had no bar and Ada was known for walking around the intimate setting with a jug in hand. If you ordered a beer, Ada would have walked into the back and reappeared with a glass of ale!
Ada enjoyed more than 30 years behind the bar and became a local celebrity for her no-nonsense approach. Under her reign, The Bell flourished as a proper drinking pub to the loyal local customers.
