The Bell and the Jailer
In 1706, the Athow family lived in Brisley Hall and John Athow was said to be the innkeeper here at The Bell.
Around this time, prisoners from King’s Lynn were made to walk all the way to the Norwich gallows. Often, they stopped at the halfway mark for a nights rest in Brisley. It was rumored that the jailers stayed in The Bell Inn, possibly enjoying a pint.
The criminals, on the other hand, did not get such treatment. They were left at St Bartholomew church in the crypt; not a particularly nice place to spend your last night before your upcoming trial.
You can still visit the crypt today where it remains under the sanctuary.
